I sat down for a brief chat with Brazilian Artist, Diogo Hayashi
to discuss his work on the YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED #@$!
Writer!! short BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR. I hope you all enjoy the
interview, as well as a sneek peek at his PRANCHETA!
HAYASHI: Back man..ufa...the stairway was huge..so did you like
the pages?
KARNIVORE: Yes. Yes, I loved the pages. I thought I'd ask you a few
questions, sort of a mini interview. Do you mind? It's for the BLOG,
I want the writer to feel better about the wait with the artwork. I
know the suspense is killing him. Plus I think those who read the BLOG would love the chance to get to know a little bit more about you.
HAYASHI: Ok..
KARNIVORE: 1) For people who do not know you, tell me a little bit
about your publishing experience in Brazil?
HAYASHI: A few years ago I was invited to teach cartooning to kids
by city hall. This was after I organized a comic convention
that attracted over 3,000 people. They (the city) noticed
that kids liked cartooning, and invited me to teach at the
cultural department...that was in '99. In 2000 we organized
the second convention, with more sponsors, famous guests,
and published my magazine PRANCHETA (It means drawing board
in Portuguese). The second convention attracted over 5,000
people, we had a cocktail party, and everything...meanwhile
I was drawing caricatures, and comic strips for various
local newspapers.
KARNIVORE: 2) So how big was PRANCHETA for you in Brazil? Who are
some of the people you got to work with on it?
HAYASHI: It was one of the first fanzines to look like a professionally
edited magazine with color covers, black and white shorts,
and color pin-ups. We had some names that helped the magazine
do well in the comic shops, such as Luke Ross(SPIDER-MAN,
X-MEN) did the cover, Manny Clarck(UNDERTAKER, X-MEN, TOMB
RAIDER, Fabio Laguna(WOLVERINE, SMILE), KLEBS Jr. (EXCALIBUR,
HEAVY METAL), and Mozart Couto(THOR. The first four were my
professors. We sold over 2000 copies, which is really good for
the Brazilian market---

KARNIVORE: That's really good for an independent in America as well.
HAYASHI: Serious. That's great man. I didn't know that...Hehehe..
KARNIVORE: 3)Who would you like to work with? Writers? Characters?
HAYASHI: I would love to work with Garth Ennis, and Alan Moore...
and I would really like to draw BATMAN, HELLBOY, and DYLAN
DOG!!!
KARNIVORE: 4) Great! Have you submitted samples of your work to
publishers in the U.S.?
HAYASHI: Yes. One day I was at the Chicago Wizard World Con, and I
met the Marvel Submissions Editor at the hotel bar, after
that we met again in NY at another bar...I sent some pages
in that he really liked a lot, but nothing really happened
so I stopped sending...also in Chicago I met the Dark Horse
Vice President on the shuttle bus to the airport, I also sent
him a lot of samples, but at the time I was very young, and
did not take the opportunity seriously.
KARNIVORE: I see.
HAYASHI: I Had better luck with the independents that liked my style.
I did some pin-ups and cards. The main stream publishers are
not my goal. I have no interest in drawing supers any more.
KARNIVORE: Speaking of your art. Your artwork is beautiful,
especially on BEHIND THE DOOR.

HAYASHI: Thank you.
KARNIVORE: I know you must have been feeling frustrated by the scanner problems you've had, along with all the other projects you are juggling...
HAYASHI: I know I have to buy one (a scanner). I'll do it this coming month...
KARNIVORE: 4) What is the one moment in your life so far that you are most proud of?
HAYASHI: When I came back to Brazil after five years of studying
film and art in New York. When I look back, and see how
many friends I made, and life experiences I've had that
helped me to grow up, and mature. My art; opening a
third eye to new things. That makes me really happy...
KARNIVORE: 5) What are some of the other projects you are currently
working on?
HAYASHI: I'm doing a few pin-ups for a magazine. I'm also working on
a comic book adaption of a film, I'm doing storyboards for
a big budget fiction film set in Rio. Besides, all that I am
producing my first short, which I scripted, and will direct.
There's also a few other shorts being produced for the web,
and other indie publications.
KARNIVORE: Great! I look forward to seeing more of your work Diogo.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with me, and for being
a part of YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED #@$! WRITER!! Well
that does it for now. I hope you all enjoyed the interview.
