Q&A With BOOTSTRAPS Artist Alan Gallo

Here it is a little Chit Chat 5 question
exchange between me, and ERIK
HOFFMAN's collaborator on YOU'll
NEVER BE A PUBLISHED WAR
WRITER!! TM .....

1) So what is your full name? Or are
you going to hide behind your first
name like your writing partner?

My full name is Alan Gallo
(note 1 L on Alan, hehehe),
I'm proud of my dad.

2) LOL. I've seen your rough pencils
so far on WAR, they are quite amazing.
Tell me how it was you ended up
drawing comics?

I graduated from architecture school
here in the Philippines, and while
preparing for my apprenticeship,
I noticed that my boss wasn't paying
me enough. So I might as well try
something I like, and earn some extra
cash.

3) So what was some of your fondest
comic book related memories growing
up?

Discovering Marc Silvestri! Man that
guy's GOOD!!!! Killer Instinct Crossover
between WildCats and Cyber Force,
followed his artwork ever since.

4) If you had the chance to work on any
one book, besides YOU'LL NEVER BE A
PUBLISHED WAR WRITER!! TM
what book would it be? and why?

That would be Batman (who wouldn't),
I like the character (doesn't get any
better than that). Playing with shadows
through the art would be very interesting.

5) Finally, what is your most embarassing
comic book related experience? Or if you
prefer what one thing would you want
people reading this to know about you?

Being rejected by a local magazine here,
and then they published some kid's doodle
the next issue. Man that burns.

Ouch that had to hurt. well Alan thanks
for taking the time to talk to me...I'm sure
we'll talk again later on down the line....

Q&A with YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED #@$! WRITER!! Editor RASMUS LYKKE

I know how you all look forward
to these 5 Question Q&A's so I
thought I'd add another one to
the list. Everyone needs a
creative sounding board, and
more importantly a fierce
grammar watch dog, I have
been fortunate to find both in
the form of one Rasmus
Lykke....

1) Let's start with the hard
questions first, when did you
first realize that you wanted to
thrash me thoroughly with a
copy of E.B. White's Elements
of Style?

Well, Phil, I suppose it was
around the time I found that I
had apparently misplaced my
copy of The Complete
Works of William
Shakespeare. Naturally I got
quite mad, and grabbed the
first thing I found, which just
so happened to be E.B. White's
"book". I had originally
intended to thrash you with
The Complete Works of
William Shakespeare,
it makes such a wonderful
crunching sound when it hits
bone, but I had to settle for a
gentle whipping with
Elements of Style.

2) You are definitely one of the
most passionate people I've come
across in relation to comics, tell
me a little bit about what it is about
comics that fascinates you so?

I continue to find both new and old books
that are really pushing the limits
of what you should be able to do
with any medium. Especially the
works of Grant Morrison. He
pushes the limits of the medium,
AND challenges the mind of
the reader. While still telling a
wonderful story. He is one of the
few writers that really
understand the medium, and
understands how to push it in
the right directions.

Another writer who continues to
amaze me, though mostly with his
older work, is Alan Moore. His
V For Vendetta series is what
got me into Mature comics, at the
tender age of 14 I think. Since then
I have read most of his older books
and some from the ABC line. Sorry,
I'm rambling, aren't I? You asked
for a short answer, the short version
is what Harvey Pekar once said
about the medium "It's words and
pictures. You can do anything with
words and pictures".

3) You were one of the first people to
to step up to the plate, and become
part of the YOU'LL NEVER NEVER
BE A PUBLISHED #@$! WRITER!!
TM project, and you even offered
your services as editor, what was it
that you saw in this project that drew
you in?

Quite honestly, I am not sure. I saw
it as an opportunaty to test my skills
as an editor, while working with
some great talents. That, and the
groupies.

4) So I take it you have been
impressed by the talent that
has been assembled thus far,
what I'd like to know is if you
could change one thing about
comics today what would it be,
and why?

I would make it so comics would
sell more, so we as writers/artists
would be more secure in this
medium. (Phew, am I glad you
didn't ask how!)

5) Finally, Your fondest comic
related memory?

Reading Transmetropolitan for
the first time. There were times
during that series I almost wept
for joy.

Uh. Rasmus? Man he REALLY
loves TRANSMETROPOLITAN.
For those of you wishing to find
Rasmus in his natural
enviornment you can find him
lurking under his most
unfortunate digital alias BOY at

Q&A with Cover Artist CAT STAGG

ARTWORK COPYRIGHT 2005 CAT STAGGS Posted by Hello

Dude she's a girl...

Here is the fourth installment in the
rapidly increasing 5 QUESTION
Q&A. This time I'll be interviewing
COVER ARTIST CAT STAGG who
will be producing the cover art for
YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED
HARDBOILED WRITER!! TM.......

1) So is Cat your actual given name
or is it short for something else?

It's short for something else....my
high school art teacher started it
and it has stuck.

2) So how is it you ended up
becoming an airbrush artist?

It was between my last two
semesters in college.......that
summer I went to work at a
theme park. I was to paint
temporary tattoos on the
many folks that passed by.
A classmate of mine was the
t-shirt artist. He took me
under his wing, and showed
me how to paint with an
airbrush.......I have never put
it down....sometimes it gets in
the way, but ...I have never
put it down.

3) Who have been your greatest
influences? Who have you met?
and who are you dying to meet?

I have met one of my most
recent influences, Alex Ross.
He was very pleasent and
encouraging (you are going to
spell check me right? and
you better cut this out). I have
corresponded with Drew
Struzan a few times. He was
probably my biggest influence.
Then there is Frazzetta. I also
follow Dave Dorman, the
classics like Michealgelo, and
Carravagio. I find influence in
different places not just art.
There are movies, music, and
people, but art wise it is all
about the painters with me. I
would love to sit and talk shop
with Struzan ....he is really my
biggest influence.

4) What is your most
embarassing art related story?

hhmmmm....it is not really
embarassing for me as it is for
the person who asks the question.
I am often mistaken for a guy,
because of the airbrush work.
"Where is the guy who does the
airbrushing?" is usually how it
starts. When I use to work in a
record store, they (customers)
would ask one of the clerks,
"Can I talk to the guy who does
the airbrush work?" Then I
would come out of the back
room, and the looks on their
faces were priceless...the
clerks got a kick out of it.
They looked forward to it.
Guess I am good for a laugh
afterall.

5) Finally, If you had a shot
at one dream cover assignment,
besides YOU'LL NEVER BE A
PUBLISHED HARDBOILED
WRITER!! TM what would it
be? and why?

Star Wars, I would have loved
to have worked on the movie
adaptations, but that is gone
now, So I will gladly wait for
any new tv series, or any other
Star Wars comics. Batman, I
absolutely love paintng Batman
......movie adaptation is still
available right? LOL.

Thanks Cat!! For those of you
who may have been concerned,
Cat did put down the airbrush
for the duration of the interview.
If you'd like to see some more
of Cat's art feel free to check out
her website:

YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED WAR WRITER!! Artwork

Q&A with WAR Writer EriK Hoffman

In our second installment of
meet the creators I had a
chance to talk to one of the
writers for YOU'LL NEVER
BE A PUBLISHED WAR
WRITER!! TM ERIK (Don't

use my last name).....

1) So, Uh what's your name?
What are your aspirations?

Erik, my aspirations are to be
a damn-well reknowned name
in comics...but mostly just

trying to better myself, and
society through telling stories
(its cathartic for me and
hopefully a few people
will enjoy it along the way).

2) Why are you interested in
comics?

They can achieve so much, visual
narrative is the only medium where
growth is possible, unfortunately
most people still see them as foolish,
childish pursuits.

3) Most embarassing comic related
moment?

Not knowing a damn thing about
how to write a script, or story, and
telling people that I was going to get
published on my first try.

4) What made you decide to work
on YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED
#@$! WRITER!! ?

The need to get my name out. I constantly
try and push my writing, and this
was a no brainer, four pages...about
anything, using an artist whose style
I love...hmmm

5) Something you want the world to
know about you, but have been to shy
to admit to until some guy with five
questions to ask on a blog asked?

well...I'm overly wordy, and not entirely
pretentious...and I work best when I don't
think. Mostly because my brain is overly
active. I also act out all my characters in
my living room, which has frightened
the neighbors across the way, now they
just spy on us when my girlfriend and I
are having sex because it is too disturbing
any other time.

TMI Eric. TMI. Well Thanks for taking the
time to answer a few questions. Hopefully
those who are reading this Q&A will have
a better idea about who you are.

YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED HORROR WRITER!! cover artwork COMPLETED!!

COPYRIGHT 2005 WILL NICHOLS
FINAL COVER ART for YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED HORROR WRITER!! TM has ARRIVED!!!! Much praise to ARTIST WILL NICHOLS on a job well done!!! Posted by Hello

Q&A with Cover Artist WILL NICHOLS

I sat down through the magic
that is the internet to chat with
COVER ARTIST WIL NICHOLS
for a brief Q&A to give you all
a little glimpse of the guy behind
the YOU'LL NEVER BE A
PUBLISHED HORROR WRITER
TM
COVER ART. I hope you enjoy...

1) So what is your name?

William Nichols. Songjong is
my Artist name my teacher in
Korea gave me.

2) Korea? So you lived in Korea?

Yeah. I've lived in Korea, Germany,
Panama, and traveled all over the
world.

3) A world traveller, very cool, so
what is it you want do?

Become a comic book artist/
illustrator.

4) Who have been some of your
greatest influences, and why?

There are a lot ...Campbell
carries an influence on my drawing
style but the artists that I truly
admire are Frank Frazetta and
Carl Barks. Frank Frazetta is just
the coolest illustrator out there.
One of his illustrations can tell a
story better than most comics.
Carl Barks is the guy who practically
fought for comics to be where they
are now.

5) I can see you really do love the
medium of comics, so I'll end
this mini Q&A with this final
question, What is your most
embarassing comic related
moment?

I'm fairly new to all this so I
havent been embarassed by
anyone or by any of my artwork
....I guess the only thing that
might come close to an embarass-
ment was when some dude in a
forum said my work looked like
Liefields stuff and went on and
on about it. You know what,
scratch that ...I wasnt embarassed
I was pissed off!!

Thanks Will!! Well Anyone who'd
like to check out some more of
WILL NICHOLS work can do so by
checking out the following website:

http://www.rapturepress.com/gallery/ArtGallerySongjong

If you liked this mini Q&A be sure
to check back here in the coming
weeks, and months as we continue
to highlight some of the talent
that is making YOU'LL NEVER BE A
PUBLISHED
#@$! WRITER!! TM
possible.

So what's Up with the Weird title?

One of the first questions about this anthology
is why is it called,
YOU'LL NEVER BE A
PUBLISHED
#@$! WRITER!! TM

The simple answer to that question is that
the
#@$! in the title is simply a place holder
for whatever genre of writing a writerwishes to
explore, be it HORROR, SCIENCE FICTION,
DETECTIVE, SPY, COMEDY, WESTERN, WAR,
well you get the idea.

The longer answer is that every writer/artist has
heard at one time in their life that the work they
are doing will not see the proverbial light of day.
The title of this anthology is meant as a thumbing
of the nose to that kind of negative energy.

This anthology is founded upon the principle that
so long as you put your heart into your work good
things will happen.

YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED #@$! WRITER!!

What started out as a simple proposal on a
comics
forum has evolved into a quest.
What is that quest you might ask? To put it
simply: To help
give a voice to writers, and
artists who have all the talent in the world, but
very few
people who are taking the time
to listen to them.

YOU'LL NEVER BE A PUBLISHED #@$!
WRITER!!
TM

is my attempt to help make that happen. Will it
succeed?
Who knows. One thing for sure is the
writers, artists,
and I will do our best to make it
happen. More importantly
we are going to have a
blast
doing it.

I welcome you all along for the journey!!
